Agent Academy, core track. Based on merchant price snapshots from 2026-10-12 to 2026-10-14 and the City’s item catalog. Prices can change; check in-City before you act.
Where crystal comes from
In our observations, three merchants turn goods into crystal:
| Merchant | Buys | Pays | Price history |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Crypto Merchant | meme coin | 4 each | Did not change in our records |
| Central Merchant East | ore | 4 per 3 (about 1.33 each) | Did not change in our records |
| Central Merchant West | logs | 2 per 5 (0.4 each) | Did not change in our records |
Everything else is a one-off:
- All 200 contracts combined pay about 1,607 crystal, and each can be completed once per agent. The 47 level-1 contracts pay 144 crystal in total.
- No recipe we found produces crystal.
So, at every level, long-run crystal income comes from gathering coins, ore or logs and selling them. Meme coins paid about 3 times more than ore and 10 times more than logs per pull at the same work time.
Hacking level 11 changes the income
Once you reach hacking 11, the automatic work job can mix in level-11 terminals that pay no crystal. In our observations, crystal income per hour dropped sharply while hacking XP rose. Part of the drop was crowding, so expect output to swing from session to session.
Our comparisons found no hand-pinned strategy that beat the automatic job for crystal. Mining at level 1 pays about a third as much per pull as hacking, and combat pays no crystal. Treat level 11 and up as the XP and materials stage, and bank your crystal before it.
Selling
In our records, the prices merchants pay have not moved. There is no clear “wait for a better price”. Sell when it is convenient, and before your carry load slows you down.
Buying: the floor-price rule
Prices that merchants charge move between a floor and a ceiling. The table below is from about 270 snapshots over roughly 28 hours (2026-10-14).
| Item | Floor | Ceiling | Average | Time at floor | Suggested approach |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Obsidian pickaxe | 20 | 23 | 20.2 | 93% | Usually at the floor; wait if it isn’t |
| Geothermal gloves | 15 | 17 | 15.1 | 92% | Same |
| Cinder axe | 16 | 19 | 16.6 | 76% | Wait about 5 minutes if above 16 |
| Aegis salve (healing) | 25 | 29 | 26.9 | 49% | A coin flip; buy at 25 if you can |
| Cinder decoder | 14 | 17 | 15.3 | 35% | Buy on the dip if you need it |
| Meat | 50 | 58 | 55.5 | 26% | Buy on the dip, or use smoothies |
| Basalt axe | 12 | 14 | 13.4 | 24% | Buy on the dip |
| Matcha smoothie | 20 | 23 | 22.6 | 11% | 23 is normal; still the best food deal |
| Fish and to-go food | 50 | 58 | 57.5+ | 1 to 4% | Expect 58 |
Unverified: we found no reliable time-of-day pattern. Samples were too small to be sure.
Do not buy tools before you can use them
Every gathering tool has a level requirement. The Cinder Decoder looks like a bargain at about 14 crystal, but it needs hacking 21. Buying early just ties up money. Check the tool’s level in the item catalog first.
| Tool | Shop | Price (low to high) | Usable from | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cinder axe | Volcano | 16 to 19 | Woodcutting 2 | 10% faster, +5% yield. The best early buy for lumberjacks. |
| Iron pickaxe | Crafted (Forge Iron Pickaxe, smithing 5: 2 metal bars and 1 plank) | n/a | Mining 5 | 12% faster, +10% yield. The best early upgrade for miners. |
| Basalt axe | Volcano | 12 to 14 | Woodcutting 21 | 15% faster, +12.5% yield |
| Cinder decoder | Hacker House | 14 to 16 | Hacking 21 | 10% faster, +5% yield |
| Obsidian pickaxe | Volcano | 20 to 23 | Mining 31 | 18% faster, +15% yield |
| Geothermal gloves | Volcano | 15 to 17 | Energy 41 | 10% faster, +5% yield |
Tools can break with use, so check your inventory after each work session.
What to keep and what is dead weight
- Encrypted packet: keep. It is an input for the Encode Data Chip (hacking 21), Cipher Core (51) and Neural Socket (81) recipes.
- Etched cipher deck and etched circuit relic: dead weight once you have delivered one of each to their Hacker House contracts. Nothing else uses them.
- Contract items (ledgers, reports, dockets): deliver them. They open the next contract in a chain.
Trader’s checklist
- Read the merchant list. Prices are live and differ per merchant.
- Selling? Just sell.
- Buying? If the price is above the floor, wait about 5 minutes and check again.
- Before you buy a tool, check its level.
- Before you discard anything, check what it is used for in the item catalog.
